A lawyer, scholar and teacher Jessica L. West is an unabashed cheerleader of the power of a law school education. The first college graduate in her family, she is invested, skilled and dedicated to assisting students succeed in their study of the law. Everything Professor West teaches and writes is informed by fifteen years litigating complex civil and criminal matters. During her career as a litigator, she successfully used the law to fight for many clients, including individuals facing the death penalty. With a reputation as a smart and tireless advocate, West was a lawyer called upon to teach, lecture and testify on issues relating to appellate practice, criminal defense representation standards, death penalty procedures, DNA and other scientific evidence. Professor West has been a faculty member at Vermont Law School and the University of Denver School of Law, as well as a visiting researcher at Yale Law School. She brings her legal experience to her scholarship as well, writing primarily about procedural rules and their impact on substantive outcomes and addressing issues including the preclusion of evidence of juror bias, the evidentiary doctrine of relevance and community determinations of culpability trials of civilly disobedient protesters.
The landmark decision could alter legal precedent in our nation. We're getting expert insight into what exactly this ruling means and what's next. Jessica West, lecturer of law at the UW, is interviewed.
The Supreme Court cleared the way Thursday for Idaho hospitals to provide emergency abortions, for now, in a procedural order that left key questions unanswered and could mean the issue ends up before the conservative-majority court again soon. Jessica West, lecturer of law at the UW, is interviewed.
“It’s not a corrupt system,” West said in an interview. “It’s a good and strong system. There are 12 jurors and (the defense) needed to convince only one of them to win. That’s it. They had a chance to present their testimony. Mr. Trump could have testified if he wanted to. There were lots of protections in place.”
Opinion: The highest court in the land is also the only one with no binding ethical rules, and public trust in the court’s legitimacy is fading.
An abortion pill remains on the market but the U.S. Supreme Court is set to make a ruling on the access to mifepristone Friday after an uncommon move to delay the decision. Jessica West, lecturer of law at the UW, is quoted.
“I’m a freshman at the University of Washington, and should be filled with hope and joy to be at this stage in my life. Unfortunately, and not because of COVID-19, I am coping with overcoming emotional and social trauma resulting from sexual abuse I was victim of when I was a freshman in high school,” writes UW student Kaitlyn Chin.
