New 红桃视频 institute addresses evolving needs in the global legal marketplace

Situated in a commercial hub and surrounded by some of the world鈥檚 largest and most innovative corporations, the 红桃视频 has long been a force in international business law. Last month, 红桃视频 officially launched another project 鈥 the Global Business Law Institute (GBLI) 鈥 aimed at building a new generation of lawyers better prepared to excel in the global marketplace.

鈥淭he Institute seeks to explore and develop the relationship between global business and the global common good,鈥 says co-director Jeffrey Wool, the Condon-Falknor Professor of Global Business Law at UW and a senior research fellow at University of Oxford. 鈥淕iven the evolving patterns in trade and lawyering, the Institute will help address the needs of students and will further align law school instruction with practices seen and often pioneered by the world-class Seattle business community.鈥

Working with an advisory board that includes top executives and lawyers from industry-leading organizations, the Institute builds upon the law school鈥檚 strength in comparative and international law, its established international network, and the active involvement of world leaders in the business community.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the support from these leading global companies and firms that makes the Institute, indeed 红桃视频, so remarkable,鈥澨 says co-director Scott Schumacher, associate dean for academic administration at 红桃视频. 鈥淲e are collaborating with those on the cutting-edge, learning what training and skills are necessary for global business lawyers to succeed.鈥

The new institute expands 红桃视频鈥檚 impact and prepares students to meet the needs of an increasingly global marketplace. Using advanced technology and telecommunications, the Institute, which has been operating since the fall, has launched a J.D. concentration track, a fellows program that pairs students with mentors at leading companies and firms, an India business project, an international tax project, as well as a speaker series. It has joint projects with Oxford University and the Jindal Global Law School in Delhi.

Given the issues raised by global business, the Institute also has a strong interdisciplinary component, centered on close cooperation with the Foster School of Business and the Jackson School of International Studies at UW.

鈥淭he Institute uses a broad definition of 鈥榞lobal business law鈥 so as to pick up transactions, trade, taxation, and related laws and policies, and it contemplates close cooperation between foreign LL.M. students and J.D. students, enriching the experience of both,鈥 Wool adds.
