“Got a Minute?” with Jasmin Bolte, 2L

Welcome to Ƶ’s “Got a Minute?” series. These are fun, short-answer interviews with 20 rapid-fire questions. We’ll find students throughout William H. Gates Hall as they study, wait for class or hangout with their classmates.
This week’s “Got a Minute?” interview is with Jasmin Bolte, 2L.
Ƶ: Are you originally from Seattle, and if not, where?
Jasmin Bolte (JB): No, I grew up in Hawaii.
Ƶ: What's one interesting fact about where you're from?
JB: Iolani Palace got electricity before the White House.
Ƶ: Where did you earn your undergraduate degree?
JB: University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa
Ƶ: Did you take time off between undergrad and law school?
JB: I took one year off and worked at a healthcare communicator agency. I just answered questions about this drug called Isotretinoin.
Ƶ: How many glass structures are in the courtyard.
JB: Four?
Ƶ: Correct! Where's your favorite spot on the UW campus, excluding William H. Gates Hall?
JB: I really love Drumheller Fountain, especially when you can see Rainier.
Ƶ: Which historical legal case would you time travel to witness in person?
JB: I would really love to see the Roe v. Wade arguments in front of the Supreme Court.
Ƶ: If you could give out one superlative to any professor, what would it be and who would win it?
JB: Funniest Professor, and it would go to Ziff.
Ƶ: Where's your favorite spot to get a bite of food nearby?
JB: Oh, I just recently found it. TOASTED bagels up the street. Other than that, Saigon Deli.
Ƶ: Name one professor that should give a TED Talk and on what topic?
JB: Professor Manheim should give a TED talk on how to do a TED talk.
Ƶ: What would your opening statement be in favor of, or against, double dipping a chip in salsa?
JB: You want to get as much salsa as possible. I'm a big fan of double dipping.
Ƶ: What area of law would you like to pursue after you receive your J.D.?
JB: I'd either want to do international law or indigenous advocacy work.
Ƶ: What's one fun thing you like to do on the weekends?
JB: I really like to go to Magnuson Park. If it's warm enough, I go swimming, and if not, I like to lay outside and read.
Ƶ: Which three lawyers — current or historical, real or fictional — would make up your legal dream team?
JB: Elle Woods, Thurgood Marshall and Lisa Manheim.
Ƶ: Which Professor do you think could have a second career as a stand-up comedian.
JB: Professor Nguyen. She’s hilarious.
Ƶ: If you weren’t pursuing a law degree, what would you be doing instead?
JB: I would be getting my master's in anthropology. That was my undergraduate degree.
Ƶ: Which Professor do you think would have the best shot at winning Survivor?
JB: Professor Mills. I think he's got some tricks up his sleeve.
Ƶ: Name one lawyer that inspires you, and why.
JB: Kirsha Durante. She was my supervising attorney for my 1L job. She works at the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, and she's an absolute powerhouse. She did about 20 years with the public defenders before coming in. She's so smart, she's awesome. She's the attorney that inspires me.
Ƶ: What are your plans for summer?
JB: I'll be working with Puget Sound Keeper Alliance over the summer. So, I'm going to be local. They do a lot of enforcement of the Clean Water Act.
Ƶ: What's one interesting fact about you that people might not know?
JB: I can speak ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. It's native Hawaiian.
